Plan your repertoire carefully
Choose a repertoire that suits your playing level and highlights your strengths as a musician. Make sure you select a variety of pieces to provide an interesting concert for your audience.
02
Practice regularly and purposefully
Establish a structured practice program, dividing your practice time evenly between the different pieces you will be playing at the concert. Concentrate on difficult passages and work on them in isolation to fully master them.
03
Memorize your repertoire
If possible, memorize your pieces or certain passages to feel more connected to the music and your audience during the concert. Memorization also allows you to play with greater freedom and expression.
04
Rehearse in a real-life situation
Organize rehearsals with the other musicians or ensembles you’ll be performing with at the concert. This will enable you to get used to playing in concert conditions, synchronize with the other musicians, and fine-tune your interpretation.
05
Control your stress and prepare yourself mentally
It's perfectly normal to have stage fright before a concert! Prepare yourself mentally by focusing on positive aspects, such as the pleasure of performing and connecting with the audience. Do some breathing exercises to relax before going on stage.
And one more thing
Make sure you take good care of your instrument
Check that your clarinet or saxophone is in good condition before the concert. Make sure you've selected and set aside a few reeds to have with you during your concert, and check that the instrument is properly adjusted to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
